La Ferramenta, Lucca
Hardware Shop Rossi was taken over from the old managers in 1940 by the father of the present owner and was expanded and reorganized during the war period.
The architecture of the shop dating back to the late 1800s, had problems with the organization of goods and security. In 1980, the owner Angelo Rossi thought about renovating and extending the business, which was carried out subsequently over the years by restoring the cellar and buying the top floor which was well-suited for the use of the warehouse.
The property which is part of a tower house of 1400 was renovated under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, and when the cellars were lowered, there were archeological finds from different past eras, above all Roman. So as to enhance the restoration they were left exposed and are still visible today – see below. On the upper floor, which is used as a study and warehouse, a large external wall belonging to the apse of a Romanesque church was also brought to light.
Hardware Shop Rossi is located in the historical centre of Lucca. It covers an area of 400 square metres divided on three floors with a goods lift connecting each floor. The shop itself is located on the middle floor with a large shop window facing onto the street. The cellars below are used as a showroom, while the top floor houses the large warehouse and the study.

Already at that time, the flow of tourists increased the development of trade and wealth in the city which can still be witnessed today by the numerous shops and businesses. In the historical centre, in particular between Via Santa Croce, Via Fillungo and Piazza San Michele which remain an ancient hub of the city centre.
